To measure the flow: hold a 10-litre bucket under the tap or shower and count how many seconds it takes to fill. Divide 600 by that number; the result is litres per minute (e.g. 40 seconds → 15 litres). The preset values are the lowest values given for classic appliances in the guide; enter your own.

Where do the new values come from?

Shower and tap: Planlı Alanlar İmar Yönetmeliği, article 57/A, paragraph 2 (added by the Official Gazette of 25 February 2022, issue 31761), on the flow limits of washbasin, sink and shower taps; quoted in Turkish:

(2) Su tasarrufunun sağlanması amacıyla lavabo ve eviyelerde 6 lt/dk'yı, duşlarda ise 8 lt/dk'yı geçmeyecek şekilde musluk veya batarya kullanılması, bunların sıhhi tesisat projesi ve mahal listesinde gösterilmesi esastır.

Cistern, dripping tap, dishes and classic appliances: Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation guide “Evlerde ve İşyerlerinde %35 Daha Az Su Kullanma Kılavuzu” (guide to using 35% less water in homes and workplaces, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Öztürk, Ankara 2018), quoted in Turkish:

  • Shower heads: “Klasik duş başlıkları dakikada ortalama 15-20 litre su akıtırken düşük akımlı (düşük debili) havalandırıcılı duş başlıkları dakikada 3.4-7.6 litre su tüketmektedir.” (PDF p. 12)
  • Taps: “…klasik musluklar dakikada 8-27 litre su tüketirken, düşük akımlı havalandırıcılı musluklar dakikada 1.8-4.5 litre su tüketir.” (PDF p. 16)
  • Toilet cisterns: “Tuvaletlerin klasik rezervuarının su depolama kapasitesi 16 litredir.” and “…yıkama başına 4 litrelik ultra düşük tuvalet rezervuar ile … su tüketimini %75 azaltmak” (PDF p. 10)
  • Dripping taps: “Evlerdeki veya işyerlerindeki bir musluk veya rezervuar saniyede bir damla su sızdırıyorsa; yılda en az 12.500 litre su israf ediliyor demektir.” (PDF p. 7)
  • Rinsing dishes: “Direkt akan musluk suyu ile kaplarınızı durulamayınız. Böylece günde, 30-60 litre su tasarruf edilmiş olur.” (PDF p. 16)

Where a range is given, the calculation uses the lower value.

Calculation: formula and lira30 days a month · lowest tariff band
  • Shower: (current flow − 8) litres a minute × minutes per person per day × number of people × 30 days ÷ 1,000 = m³ a month.
  • Tap: (current flow − 6) litres a minute × minutes per person per day × number of people × 30 ÷ 1,000.
  • Cistern: (current volume − 4) litres × flushes per person per day × number of people × 30 ÷ 1,000.
  • Dripping tap: number of taps × 12,500 litres ÷ 12 months ÷ 1,000.
  • Dishes: 30 litres a day × 30 ÷ 1,000.
  • Lira: m³ saved a month × the water charge of the lowest band in the household tariff of your province's water utility. The wastewater charge, taxes and band differences are not added, so the figure is a lower bound. In a province without a verified tariff only m³ is shown. Tariffs: verified 25 October 2026; details on the page Is my bill normal? (Turkish).
